Boiler Repair in Southampton, Hampshire

Boiler repair is what you need when the heating has stopped and nobody has yet told you why. We diagnose the fault first, quote the part and the labour before touching anything, and say plainly when a repair is not worth doing. No heating in February is not a reason to be sold a new boiler on the spot, and we do not work that way.

Boiler Repair Faults We See Most in Southampton

Hard water shapes the fault pattern here. Chalk-derived supply at roughly 240 to 280 parts per million means scale accumulates on the plate heat exchanger inside every combi in the city, and lukewarm or fluctuating hot water while the heating still works perfectly is the classic symptom. On an unprotected system it can appear within six or seven years rather than twelve.

The other recurring faults are pressure that will not hold, which usually means the expansion vessel has lost its charge rather than that you have a leak; a boiler that fires then locks out, typically a fan, a flue sensor or a blocked condensate run; radiators cold at the bottom while the boiler runs hot, which is sludge rather than a boiler fault at all; and no hot water with heating unaffected, which points at the diverter valve.

Boiler Repair Costs, Fitted

  • Expansion vessel replaced or recharged — from £180 to £300
  • Diverter valve — from £240 to £400
  • Circulating pump — from £260 to £440
  • Plate heat exchanger — from £300 to £500
  • Fan — from £300 to £480
  • Printed circuit board — from £380 to £640
  • Power flush where sludge is the underlying cause — from £400 to £700

Parts and labour included. Where a fault is straightforward and the part is stocked, most jobs are completed on the first visit.

Two Things You Can Check Before Calling

Pressure. If the gauge reads below roughly 1 bar the boiler will refuse to fire. Topping up through the filling loop restores it. If it drops again within a fortnight, stop topping up and call us, because something is either leaking or the expansion vessel has failed, and repeated topping up accelerates corrosion inside the system.

Condensate pipe. A boiler that locks out during the first hard frost of the winter, often with a gurgling sound, is usually a frozen condensate pipe rather than a broken boiler. Where the pipe runs outside and is reachable, a jug of warm, not boiling, water poured slowly along its length will normally clear it, after which the boiler resets and runs. If it recurs every cold snap, the pipe is undersized, poorly lagged or badly routed, and it is worth correcting properly.

When We Will Tell You to Stop Repairing

We use a straightforward threshold. If a single repair costs more than a third of a new installation and the boiler is past ten years old, replacement is the better spend. Below that, repair it. The other stopping points are a corroded heat exchanger, obsolete parts that have to be sourced second-hand, and three failures across consecutive winters, which tells you the remaining components are all the same age as the ones that have already gone.

If that is where you have arrived, our boiler replacement page sets out the costs, and we will never make that recommendation on the doorstep of a first visit without showing you the reasoning.

Safety, and What We Will Not Do

Any engineer working on gas in Great Britain must be on the Gas Safe Register, and unregistered gas work is a criminal offence rather than a paperwork matter. The register is public, and checking whoever attends takes under a minute at the Gas Safe Register. Ask us for our details and check them.

Where an appliance is found immediately dangerous it is disconnected and capped, and you are given the paperwork explaining why. That is not an upsell tactic, it is the required response, and no reputable engineer will reconnect an appliance in that condition to keep a customer happy. Carbon monoxide is the reason the rule exists.

Questions About Boiler Repair

How quickly can you attend? Same or next working day for a total loss of heating or hot water across most of the city. Emergency boiler repair is prioritised where there is no heating at all. Tell us the symptom and the boiler make when you call, so the right parts are on the van.

Will you repair any make? Almost all domestic gas boilers. Very old or obscure models sometimes have no parts available at all, which we will tell you before charging for a diagnosis that cannot lead anywhere.

Does a repair affect my warranty? A manufacturer warranty generally requires an annual service and registered work. Both are satisfied here. Missed services are the usual reason a claim fails, not the repair itself.

Is this a repair or a service? Different jobs. A service is a planned annual check on a working boiler, covered on our boiler servicing and landlord CP12 page. A repair fixes something that has already failed.

Areas We Cover

We attend breakdowns across Southampton and the surrounding towns, including Portswood, Woolston, Shirley, Bitterne and Eastleigh, plus Sholing, Bitterne Park, Freemantle, Millbrook and Chandler’s Ford.

If the boiler is beyond economical repair we will quote for boiler installation at the same visit, but only once you have the diagnosis in front of you.
